Janice Forand, BA Phys. Ed. MEd. canfitpro PRO TRAINER PTS, FIS, HWL, CPR & First Aid, RAB 1&2,
I am thrilled to announce that we are now officially 30 years young!
The Locker Room Health and Fitness Club, Ltd. has been in the business of fitness since September 1st, 1986 and is still growing strong! (Pun intended!)
It is a journey that started with a dream my late husband, Rick and I took on with enthusiasm, energy and a one month old baby (AKA Katie) back in 1986! I am so proud to have made it into our third decade of "Fitness for Fun! Fitness for Life" in my home town of Windsor, N.S. and even prouder to have watched many generations of community members become part of our fitness family. Many of you have now grown up with our fitness club as a part of our local community landscape; it seems to have always been there...
Like one of my own children - the club has grown and developed and been a part of many different experiences since 1986! From the early days of leg warmers, headbands, body suits, baggy muscle shirts and pants to current ZUMBA wear and sweat wicking Lycra clothing we have seen you in lots of different styles...big hair, spiked hair, colorful hair, grey hair, and no hair...ever constantly evolving. As a Club , we "keep on keeping on" and change with the times, not only with our clothing styles, but with our dedication to offering top quality programming.
Our club is the host site for national certification programs and have been part of offering certification standards even before this became a requirement in the fitness industry. I myself, have personally trained and certified hundreds of fitness professionals over the years; some local, many from across our beautiful province, as well as the Atlantic provinces, and for others from across the country, with a few travelling to other parts of the world to work as fitness professionals.
One thing that still remains after 30 years, is our love for what what we do as a club with the services we provide our community and fellow fitness professionals.
Special thanks to all the current and former staff members that have helped us over the years develop and grow as a club and family. Some of you may remember and still know some of these names:
Patty, Monique, Paul, Grace, Jane, Greg, Joy, Karen, Susan N, Michelle, Andrea, Patrick, Susan S, Allison, Sherry MJ, Alan,
Sherry S, Mike, Geoff, Brett, Tammy, Barbie, Judy, Barb, Kristen, Jessica, Doris, Kelly, Lisa, Sandra, Jenn, Jan, Lauren, Christie, Katie, Tyler, and of course our beloved Jocelyn! As I sit and reflect, I know I have missed any names of staff that have been part of our fitness family over the years. My apologies, but please know I am very grateful! It boggles my mind to think of the many folks that have worked for us, with us and supported us! AND to add to that the hundreds - no - thousands of folks that have walked through our doors at 99 Stannus Street since 1986!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
That being said, if you would like to share your earliest positive experiences at the club, or any other wonderful memories from your days as a member or guest at our club, please feel free to send them c/o our "contact us" or "I want to share my thoughts with you" links throughout this website. I'd love to hear from you, take a walk down memory lane, and share your stories with others (with your permission of course)!
Here's to a wonderful 30th year together and to more "Fitness with Fun! Fitness for Life"
Sincerely, Janice Forand - Club Owner since 1986!

Thanks for participating in "Karma Fitness with Katie" an afternoon of
Fitness with Fun! Fitness for Life! Fitness with a Purpose!
Karma Fitness with Katie got raved reviews this past Sunday! Katie hosted and worked it out in a 90 minute class featuring: 30 minutes of Zumba, 30 minutues of RIP Rx followed by 30 minutes of Yoga to balance it all out! A free will offering was collected with all proceeds donated to Katie's fundraising team, all of whom are working towards collecting funds for the Relay for Life 2013. Thank you to everyone for coming in, donating what you could, and sharing the afternoon of Fitness with Fun! Fitness for Life! Watch for more special events in the upcoming months.
Katie participates in RELAY for LIFE to honor her dad!
Katie gave the opening address to participants at the Relay for Life Event tonight at the Windsor Exhibition Grounds - Friday, May 31st.

She is also participated on behalf of cancer surviving members including the Forand & Lebrasseur Family. special tribute was also made to members of the Brown Family along other friends and relatives who were touched by cancer.

Thank you to everyone who supported our ZUMBATHON event on Friday, September 21st at Falmouth District School. This FUN Fundaraiser had approximately 60+ participants at any given time moving dancing and grooving to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Research. In honour of our beloved Rick, instructors and participants congregated at the school for an hour and a half of ZUMBA FUN! Instructors brought their own special flavour and style to the stage and the room. Grooves were lead by our local instructors: Katie & Janice Forand, Angie Curry, Allison Stephens, Josie Lake, plus "The Yarmouth Gals" (Linda, Jamie, Jenna, and Kellie), and Katie's recruit, Lee (she's mentoring - an Acadia Student from China) - performing for the first time in front of a group (YIKES!!!! she did a great job!)
canfitpro Toronto 2012 Conference
Reflections from Janice...
What a weekend in Toronto! It was awesome, with the best in the fitness industry gathering to share the latest in research, ideas and programming. The Locker Room was well represented with Angie, Katie and Janice attending a variety of sessions, moving, grooving, sweating, learning, laughing and (at times) even crying. Keynote speaker, Simon Whitfield shared the lessons learned on his journey to the London 2012 Olympics and the unforgettable ending to his medal pursuit. Tosca Reno received a Lifetime achievement award and spoke on behalf of her late husband, Robert Kennedy, (publisher of Muscle Mag, Oxygen Magazine and many other fitness publications) and reminded us of those we have lost to cancer this year. Ironically when they introduced the award for Robert, I was reminded so much of Rick's journey and joie de vie. I was almost compelled to go up and accept the award on Rick's behalf with the parallels being so connected between our Rick and Robert Kennedy...Tosca described Robert as "the love of her life" and when it was mentioned that he passed away on April 11th, 2012 - I was "gobsmacked" as he passed only a week after Rick, and on a day that reminded me of Rick's favorite number - "11". I feel Rick was there, with me on that day in Toronto, letting me know it was ok...you're never alone...
The closing ceremonies also touched all our hearts deeply as Katie and I sat holding hands and offering each other tissues while Peter Twist spoke of his own personal journey with cancer these past few years. It was like Peter saw the life Rick and our family had lead recently, and echoed Rick's own desire in his heart to "get well", "be here for us all", and not fall into the statistics of those cancer has taken from us. Feeling like he was "in the best shape of his life" (as Rick did up until the diagnosis) Peter totally captured the emotion and frustration cancer brings to us all. It was very, very moving and a gift to share such an intimate story. He was amazing! The mantra "I WILL" is forever with me!
On a more uplifting note, it was great to see former employee Patrick Savoury and reconnect with fitness professionals from all over the world. Reunited once more, the FAB FOUR, including Janice and best buds: Andrea Mounce-Halasz, Sherry MacKenzie-Jennison and Michelle Kerr shared the "girls weekend experience yet again. What a fun crew to hang out with...we love our weekend in Toronto....here's to canfitpro Toronto 2013.

Zumba Fitness Convention 2012 in Orlando, Florida
From August 8th-13th our community was missing some Zumba Fitness Instructors. Katie and Angie left the nice Nova Scotia weather to head to humidity and lightning town (Orlando) to attend the Zumba Fitness Convention. For four days they learnt from the "big wigs" of the Zumba world. They danced the days away and partied into the night (like only those crazy Z people do) and sweat out more liquid than was previously thought possible! Both Katie and Angie were pulled up on stage to strut their stuff (so selected because of their mega watt smiles), and even got to meet the man himself, Beto, the creator of Zumba. There were over 10,000 ZIN members in attendance from all around the world! Angie was lucky enough to be part of the ZIN Live 41 DVD taping with Beto, and Katie got two surprise appearances from Beto in her B2 training (she can now proudly state she's been trained by Beto) and 'Dancing Through the Decades' (post class picture to the left).
World IDEA 30th Anniversary Convention:
Janice attended the 30th Anniversary World IDEA convention in San Diego, California.
She had an amazing trip. learned a lot, shared her story with very kind, empathetic people. Met Maritimers via Yellowknife that new people that used to work for our club and restaurant, and had Rick as a teacher! Learned the specifics of Schwinn Cycling and got Certified to teach this program (sore butt to prove it!). She danced with Louis Van Amstel from Dancing with the Stars. Saw and heard Jane Fonda in person at the opening ceremonies. She met club owners, managers, personal trainers & intructors from: Brazil, the USA, Autralia, Canada, Japan, the UK, France, and many other countries and made memories to last a lifetime!
